Amazon Sets Record for Most Renewable Energy Purchased in a Single Year

The world is in dire need of a transformation in the way it sources its energy, and we're seeing improvements year after year. Climate change and environmental degradation have become pressing global issues, and the burning of fossil fuels is a major contributor to these problems. The need for clean, renewable energy has never been greater, and big companies like Amazon are stepping up to the challenge.

Amazon’s commitment to renewable energy

Amazon, one of the world’s largest e-commerce companies, has set an impressive record in the world of renewable energy. In 2022, the company added 8.3GW of renewable energy capacity globally, across 133 new projects in 11 countries. This brings Amazon’s total renewable energy portfolio to over 20GW across 401 projects in 22 countries, making it one of the largest corporate buyers of renewable energy in the world.

In the US, Amazon led the corporate power purchase agreements (PPAs) last year, with a total of 10.2GW of solar PPA contracted. The company’s CEO, Adam Selipsky, stated that they are on track to power their operations with 100% renewable energy five years ahead of their original target in 2030.

Expanding renewable energy footprint across the globe

The new projects announced by Amazon are spread across Europe, Asia, and the United States, providing a significant boost to the renewable energy sector. In Europe, the company has added 11 projects in Finland, Germany, Italy, Spain, and the UK, with a total capacity of 372MW. In the US, the company has added four projects in Arizona, California, and Texas, with a capacity of 918MW. One of the projects in California will be co-located with energy storage.

In Asia, Amazon is increasing its footprint in India with its third solar-wind hybrid project, with a capacity of 200MW, while the previous two projects had a total capacity of 300MW. The company also invested in its first utility-scale project in Indonesia and added three on-site solar projects in Japan with a capacity of 38MW.

The importance of renewable energy for big companies

Big companies like Amazon play a crucial role in the transition to a renewable energy-powered future. With their significant financial and technological resources, they have the ability to drive innovation and investment in the renewable energy sector. By investing in renewable energy projects, these companies can significantly reduce their carbon footprint and contribute to the global effort to combat climate change.

In addition, renewable energy helps to diversify energy sources, reducing dependence on fossil fuels and promoting energy security. Renewable energy also creates new job opportunities in the clean energy sector, spurring economic growth and contributing to sustainable development.

Moreover, companies that adopt renewable energy not only benefit the environment but also benefit themselves. Renewable energy is becoming more competitive in terms of cost, making it an attractive alternative to traditional fossil fuels. Additionally, companies that prioritize sustainability and environmentally responsible practices can improve their reputation and attract customers who value eco-friendly products and services.

So,

The transition to renewable energy is an ongoing process, but with the commitment of companies like Amazon, the future looks bright. The company’s investment in renewable energy sends a positive message to the world, encouraging others to follow suit and contributing to the global effort to transition to a low-carbon economy. The company’s goal to power their operations with 100% renewable energy five years ahead of their original target is a clear indication of their commitment to sustainability and the future of the planet. In the coming years, we can expect more companies to follow in Amazon’s footsteps, as the world moves towards a greener, more sustainable.
